Alfred Hill recalls that "this instrument was purchased, personally, by me in Milan in 1901...from an Italian nobleman residing in one of those fine houses in the vicinity of the Cathedral.' He goes on to describe the violin as 'a charming example of the maker in an exceptionally good state of preservation." Letter:  W. E. Hill & Sons, London, May 2, 1939
describing the instrument as 'an exceptionally well preserved and characteristic example of the maker's work'.
