Born in Germany, 1775. Came to London and was employed as a chair maker. Eventually formed a friendship with Fendt, who persuaded him to become a permanent member of Thomas Dodd’s workshop, 1798. Later established own place of business in King Street, Seven Dials. Died 1853. Especially famed for double basses. Called the King of English makers in this respect.
