A native of Hebei Province (b. 19??)， he traveled to metropolitan Tienjin to support himself as a carpenter. He was 16 and started making violin， self-taught. He went to Shanghai in the 50's to attend Prof. Tan Shu-Chen's luthiery class. His instruments are of such quality that they impressed then visiting French violin dealers. For political reasons he was prevented by the authorities from going abroad to participate in violin making competitions. He authored many papers on the art of violin making， but all were unpublished. He passed away in 1986， and all his manuscripts were destroyed at his request
