Detail Introduction
Giacomo Gennaro (b 1624; d 1701) , Cremona Giacomo Gennaro is his formal name, but he usually labeled his violin with “Jacobus Januarius” in Latin, which is commonly used. He is rarely known by people, but he apprenticed and worked with Nicolò Amati. It is said that Gennaro lived with Amati from 1641 to 1646. His works are rare; only 2 or 3 pieces were confirmed. He worked for Amati for a long time, and seldom used his own label, that is to say, maybe Amati or Andrea Guarneri’s works were made by Gennaro. Gennaro’s workmanship was pure and well-balanced, which was similar to Nicolò Amati. His violins were almost golden yellow, similar with most maters’ works; his works also got excellent tones.
