Detail Introduction
One of the best British violin makers of the 18th century. He was born in Saliury and arenticed with his uncle, a musical itrument maker. He opened his own shop in Saliury and seems at first to have made keyboard itruments before turning to violin making. His work shows the influence of Joseph Hill, Peter Wamsley and particularly William Forster, all of whom worked in London at the time. His best itruments are Amati copies, and his cellos are particularly fine. Banks liberally signed and branded his itruments, and also made bows which he branded. Of his nine children, at least three went into violin making. ShopsDiscussion board forBanks,Benjamin(1) |
