Son of Edward Betts (a farmer in Stamford). In 1765 he was apprenticed to Richard Duke for 7 years, at which time he became shop foreman and eventually he bought the busine. Betts imported high-quality Italian itruments to England. His shop was staffed at times by many talented craftsman including Vincenzo Panormo, Joseph Hill II, Henry Lockey Hill, Richard Tobin, the B.S. Fendts, and John Furber.
