Son of Marie Joseph Georges CHARDON and Berthe Sieur, Andre CHARDON was born on July 18, 1897.
He was very young when he joined the family business. The origins of this firm go back to Georges CHANOT, one of Andre\'s predecessors. He began his training as a violinmaker with his father in 1912.
He was mobilized on April 6, 1915, after his period of military training.
The war over, he returned to Paris on June 28, 1919.
In 1920, he married his wartime correspondent, Emilie Larue, with whom he had exchanged many letters.
He then specialized in bowmaking while continuing to repair and to adjust stringed instruments.
As early as 1930, he learned of the Hill underslide through the London branch of his family and experimented with this new mounting\'. He produced some very triangular sticks with almost sharp angles on the sides (bow 10). He even made several bows with sticks which could be taken apart at a level with the lapping; an invention which, like many others, was to have no success!
He gradually improved his style, based on that
of the old masters, TOURTE and PECCATTE(bows 3 and following), and he participated the 1937 Paris Exhibition, with E. A. OUCHARD. and A. RICHAUME.
At that time, without giving up violinmaking he became a talented and appreciated bowmaker - He set up at 39, Rue de Rome, Paris 8th.
It should not be forgotten that the stock of bowmaking wood bought by his grandfather CHANOT during the 1870s allowed Andre to profit from a large quantity of pernambuco wood of remarkable quality. Georges CHANOT, a great lover of bows, had toured Europe in a horse-drawn coach with his famous five¬-level (see photos 16 A to 0), which he kept full of bows to exchange for violins, instead of paying cash. After the death of his father on June 16, 1949 he carried on the family tradition at the head 0f this large firm, with his sister Josephine. His production of bows was somewhat red because he had to do instrumental restoration work as well as dealing with his customers. He died on August 24, 1963. He left a rather small quantity of bows, but of quality.
