Having graduated in fine art (sculpture & painting), he taught art and music for several years,began making instruments and undertaking repairs due to involvement in both early music and school orchestras. Since the late 1970s has worked with colleagues from many schools and nationalities, both making & repairing instruments.
In the late 1990s moved to Derbyshire and subsequently established the English Cello Studio with Dr John Basford. During this period devoted time to exhaustive research into the history of the violin, the nature of its construction & varnish, and making many copies as part of the process.
now works from home continuing to develop the re-creation of the famous grounds of the golden period and refining work on C18th & C19th varnishes and pigments. Most work is undertaken for shops and dealers, although undertakes a number of commissions & restorations for individual players.
